Da Paolo e Judie
16 years ago, Trattoria Da Paolo was
begun by Paolo and Judie Scarpa in Tanjong Pagar. Though it
is now closed, it inaugurated an exquisite tradition of fine
Italian dining in lovely venues that the Da Paolo name stands
for today.
Da Paolo e Judie is the third and quite possibly the most romantic
of the Da Paolo restaurants. Quite aptly, it opened on Valentine’s
Day of 2001. This heralded a feast for the eyes and tongues
of all Singaporeans, be they gourmet or gourmand, soaring solo
or cosily coupled.
Da Paolo e Judie, located at 81 Neil Road, is a charming continuation
of the Da Paolo tradition. It is situated in a beautifully renovated
shop house from the 1920s. The interiors are the sophisticated
designs of the renowned Singaporean architect, Mok Wei Wei of
William Lim & Associates, whilst the spaces are imaginatively
lit by lighting maestro, Kaoru Mende.
The restaurant is divided into separate entertainment zones.
An alfresco dining area and bar are on the ground level. Here,
guests can relax with pre-dinner drinks in an ultra-luxe environment
of dark-stained teak and wenge timber. The formal dining area
on the second floor is accessed via a sleek portico of white
Italian marble complete with a steel and glass staircase.
The menu is classical Italian cuisine with a focus on seafood
and fresh home-made pasta. The chef de maison, Paolo Scarpa,
was trained in Venice and London – where he honed his
craft at the famous Harry’s Bar and Cecconi’s –
before he moved to Singapore in the 80s. With Da Paolo e Judie,
Chef Paolo returns to his Venetian roots to produce a charmingly
diverse menu of crustaceans and assorted marine-fare. Each dish
is carefully and imaginatively crafted so that the flavours
of the sea remain intact.
Da Paolo e Judie is open for lunch and dinner, Monday to Friday;
dinner on Saturday and closed on Sunday. For dining reservations,
please telephone 6225 8306.
